Berlin Museums – What to see!

We talked before about some of the coolest cities in Germany. While talking about it we mentioned some really cool Berlin Museums. So we thought now would be as good a time as ever to go over some of these Berlin Museums and talk about our favourites. This list is brought to you by Lewis Evans of The Slow Road (butterfield.com). The museums in this list are in no particular order.

  • Museumsinsel (Museum Island) is a UNESCO world heritage site. This isn’t just one museum but 5 museums that hold world-famous art, artifacts and more. It was first established in 1830, and will even be gaining a new addition (the Museum of Asia Art) in 2019.
  • Pergamon Museum is Berlin’s most popular museum. It receives about 1,000,000 visitors per year. Evans says, “the Pergamon Altar is the main draw here along with the impressive Ishtar Gate of Babylon, and the Roman Market Gate of Miletus with some lovely mosaics”.
  • Altes Museum (Old Museum), first opened in 1830, was Prussia’s pioneering achievement. Evans says that within it “you’ll find a storehouse of Greek and Roman art and sculptures from the 10th until the 1stC BCE.”.
  • Neues Museum (New Museum) is a Berlin museum that has been through a lot. It was first built in the mid-1800’s and was brutally damaged during WW2. This building was rebuilt in 2009 and is filled with “Egyptian, prehistoric and classical antiquities, including the famed bust of Nefertiti”.Of course, there are many other museums to visit while you’re there.
